These Doshas make up every individual and have different traits, performing different physiological functions in the body.
What causes disease is an imbalance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha Doshas in the body and not the ‘Dosha’ itself.
Ayurveda originated in India approximately 5000 years ago. The philosophy was built based on a wide variety of herbs, and how they interact with our body and environment. It is the oldest system of health care in the world. It offers a complete approach to living. It aims to establish the ability to live every aspect of life to its fullest in complete conscious connection to nature’s infinite intelligence.
Ayurveda offers a holistic model of healthcare, where mind, body and spirit are given equal importance, a fact which is considered fundamental to life’s wholeness and therefore health. Natural medicine recognises that there are limits to the body-based system response approach offered by conventional medicine. Emmett Walsh is an Ayurvedic practitioner and he seeks to treat the cause of the disease at a deep level and not just respond to symptoms.
The Theory of the Three Doshas VATA, PITTA , KAPHA.
The three Doshas are unique to Ayurveda, and represent the three types of energy that is responsible for life itself.
VATA – controls all motion or movement.
PITTA – controls all transforming processes.
KAPHA – controls cohesion, growth, and liquefaction.
According to the principle of Ayurveda, the secret to complete healthy well-being is balancing the 3 doshas. When they are in balance, they can contribute to good health and overall well-being.
Every being has an inherent dosha during their birth, but it might not be ‘contamination that causes disease but it is an imbalance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas in the body and not the ‘dosha’ itself.
As an imbalance of these elemental combinations is the direct cause of physical disease. The prime disease causing factors (the “contaminants”), secondary factors in the disease process, like body tissues, toxins , and waste materials are actually the product of, or dependent upon, an imbalance in the doshas
Ayurveda considers the 3 doshas the backbone of basic existence. They make up our physical personality, the mind and our total existence. According to the principle of Ayurveda, the secret to complete healthy well-being is balancing the 3 doshas.
The word Vata is derived from the Sanskrit verb “vah” means vehicle; to carry; to move. The elements of ether and air combine to form the dosha of Vata. Vata is connected to the nervous system and therefore reaches every part of the body. Traditionally, Ayurveda calls these the “winds” of the body – the impulses travelling along nerves, muscles, blood vessels and anywhere there is bodily motion.
The word Pitta is derived from the Sanskrit word “tap” meaning heat; austere. The elements of fire and water combine to form the dosha Pitta. Pitta is responsible for metabolism and is equated with the body’s heat as well as digestion of food and thought.
The word Kapha is derived from the Sanskrit roots “Ka” which means water and “pha” which means to flourish. The elements of water and earth combine to form the dosha Kapha. Kapha comprises all our cells, tissues and organs as is responsible for maintaining the structure of the body as well as keeping it moist and well lubricated.
